What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used for over 4,000 years to promote natural healing. Chinese medicine employs primary treatment techniques such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion, or auriculotherapy, depending on what the patient needs. One of the main characteristics of these treatments, apart from their effectiveness, is that they lack the side effects commonly found in conventional drugs.

Acupuncture focuses on restoring the natural energy, called “Qi,” in the body’s channels known as “meridians.” According to traditional Chinese medicine, diseases are caused by blockages in these energy channels. If your Qi is blocked, blood circulation stagnates, causing pain and illness. Acupuncture works to balance the blood flow in the organs, glands, and body tissues.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Current research reveals that acupuncture works by activating the pathway between the nervous system (nerves) and the endocrine system (glands). It works to balance the blood flow in the organs, glands, and body tissues. In an initial consultation, the patient is interviewed about their habits and lifestyle, diet, and health, and their pulse and tongue are examined, which, according to traditional Chinese medicine, provide much information about the patient’s health status. After making a diagnosis, a treatment plan is determined by selecting specific points to treat the patient’s ailment. In subsequent sessions, depending on the case, it may be combined with massage or other oriental therapies.
